FADEOMETERIZING
Textile and Dyes experiment
From the Hélios research
Mobilier National, 2020
Collaborators: Léontine Pigot, Julia Ritzer & Éloïse Ravet
This research project explored light not as a threat to textile preservation, but as a creative force. At the Mobilier National, sunlight is usually avoided for its fading effect on dyes. We reversed this perspective, using natural dyes and controlled exposure to reveal textiles’ evolving beauty over time—each stage unveiling new layers of color and meaning.
Developed during my Master’s residency, the project was enriched by conversations with weavers, dyers, and restoration experts, resulting in video interviews and published articles. Helios brought together designers from product, graphic, and media backgrounds, fostering a rich cross-disciplinary process.
As part of the process, we conducted tests on dyed samples using a fadeometer—a machine that simulates solar radiation to evaluate how colors change over time when exposed to sunlight.
